Seth Rollins 08-30-2013
Colby Lopez was sitting in his new condo in Philly, on the couch. Leighla Schultz, was laying in his arms asleep. She had a long flight from Florida and the only thing the two had felt like doing this night was relaxing with each other. He turned the TV off and looked down at Leighla. Colby smiled as he was looking down at her. His memories of the night that they first became official flooded into his mind. It was truly a night that he would never forget. Colby’s eyes grew tired and he laid his head back. As he drifted off to sleep the night that he and Leighla became official became clear in his mind as if he were reliving it right then and there.
It's a late evening in Daven Port, IA. The darkness has engulfed the city and for some it seems like the perfect night. Colby was at home from the road and decided that now would be a good time to talk to Leighla, who he had been seeing for quite a while now. The two had always been like friends since the first day they met each other. Neither thinking of something more between them in the beginning. But, in the world we live in one night can change our entire lives with just the smallest of actions. For Colby that night has been on his mind now for a couple of months. He didn't want to take what happened that night and just run on straight emotions. This wasn't a friendship he wanted to lose over something that he didn't know existed. The dreams just became too over bearing though, and seeing her now, he saw her in a different light then he used to.
The lights in the house were all out, the fire place was lit as well as candles all around the house, a soft music filled the air, and a sweet aroma of food filled the nose. Colby wanted tonight to be perfect if he was going to do this. It was all still weird for him though, not the preparations but who they were for. He had told Leighla to meet him at the house around seven. This for her was normal but when she asked what they were doing, that was what got her wondering what was Colby up to. He would not say what they were going to do only that he wanted it to be a surprise. He had just finished setting out the plates on the table when the door bell rang. A sudden rush of fear and excitement ran through him at the same time and for a moment he couldn't move, but after a few seconds he walked to door and standing there in a black strapless dress was Leighla.
Now Leighla was a girl who casual meant a hoodie and jeans. Colby stood frozen at the sight in front of him this night though. He had asked Leighla to dress up because he wanted to do something special tonight. At first glance the dress was a form fitting strapless black dress from Betesy Johnson. The dress came down half way to her knees, beautiful silver loop earrings with a diamond in the middle of each hung from her ears. They were special to her because Colby had given them to her for her birthday one year and she only wore them on special occasions. Her hair was straightened down to a length just below her lower back. Leighla stood at five foot, five inches. Her build was that of an athletic type. Her skin was always a dark tan from being near a beach or being in the sun. She had a black Louis Vuitton purse around her left shoulder and black high hills from Gucci. The woman before Colby was enough to make most drop dead. A smile drifted across her face as he was speechless.
Leighla's glance went from looking at Colby to the inside of the house where she noticed the fire, candles, and the aroma of the food. Her eyebrow raised and she placed her left hand on her hip and put her glare back on Colby who recovered after seeing this look on her face of what the Hell is going on. He composed himself and moved out of the way and let her step through the door way still not quite able to speak. She draped her pocketbook on the coat rack that was next to door and walked into the living room where the fireplace was lit. She walked to the fire and turned around taking a better glance at the room. He joined her briefly after and stood at the door way leaning against the frame looking at her. She took a moment, looking around, and caught the glimpse of Colby who was also wearing all black, but for Colby, he was wearing black designer jeans, black shoes, and a black button dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up just above his elbows.
Leighla Schultz: You know Colby if I didn't know any better I'd say by the way you have the house right now it were set up for a date. I mean the lights down, the candles, the fireplace, and I don't know what the smell is but it's wonderful. Is there something you want to tell me. You tell me to dress up because you want to do something special since you are in town for a couple of days and this is what I walk into. As long as I have known you, you have never done anything like this for me. So what is going on Colby?
Colby Lopez
Always the perceptive one Leighla. There is something I want to tell you. And, to start off, this set up here is for you. But I'll explain everything more as the night goes on. But, to fully know what is going on you will have to go through everything tonight. And, I know you, you want to know what is going on, so shall we get started? I'll explain more over dinner which is ready. I don't want it getting cold.
Leighla Schultz
Uh huh. Why Colby Lopez, you do know me all too well. I guess I will have to go along with you if I intend to find out your ambitions for tonight. And, dinner sounds good, I'm starving. I do hope being on the road hasn't hurt your cooking. You used to be one the best cooks I knew when you did it before. So, I get to find out a little bit more over dinner? If you know me then you know I'll be asking the questions and I want the answers when I ask them. And, my first question is this, I know you have a reason for this, so what is it that brought you to all of this? Colby you are a rational thinker and you don't just jump into something, so something put this thought in your mind and I want to know what it is.
Colby led Leighla to the table and pulled out her chair for her to sit down. After she had got comfortable at the table he went into the kitchen and brought out the food and placed the meal on her plate that was sitting in front of her. He did the same for his plate and sat the dish down in the middle of the table. He headed back to the kitchen and came out with a bucket of ice which had a bottle of wine in the middle. He opened the wine and poured Leighla's glass full and proceeded to fill his own before sitting the bucket on the table as well. He sat down himself and got comfortable. The two said a prayer and after that he looked at Leighla with a smile. She returned the smile and took the fork and knife that were laid on the eloquent napkin beside the plate and took a small bite of the food. She let out a small moan from the taste of the food and then took a small sip of the wine. He took a couple of bites of his food and a few sips of his wine before looking at her.
Colby Lopez: I see that my food hasn't gotten worse by your reaction. That is a good thing. Now, to answer your first question. I must say you know how to ask the right questions first I might add, but yes there was something that led me to start thinking about doing tonight. It weighed on my mind for quite a while because I didn't want to just rush something and not know what I was doing. You know very well just how much you mean to me as my friend and I don't know what I would do if I lost that. So, that should let you know just how hard this is for me. The situation that led me to this decision though I'm sure you will remember as well as I do.
It was a couple of months back when we went to this charity dinner for disabled kids. We had just had dinner and they played music for everyone to dance. I know you and how much you liked to dance. It was what you would call our song if we had one. I asked you to dance and you said yes. So, we were dancing to this song and I don't know if this happened with you but to me it was like we were the only two people on the floor. The song and people disappeared and all I saw was you and I dancing in the moment. But, when you kissed me that was something I wasn't expecting and that sent something through me that I have never felt before. So I pushed it aside that night and kept it in my mind to think about more. When I left to go back on the road, I noticed myself missing you more than the normal. I wanted to have you with me. I wanted to hold you and not like I do when we are playing around, but hold you like I never want to let you go. I wanted to kiss you, to have that feeling again. That wasn't all that was on my mind.
I had to think, does she like me more than a friend? Could it be that we have finally crossed over that fine line and finally let our emotions take control. Then I was asking myself, is this what I really want? Is this something I honestly want to try and risk that friendship. But the more I was away from you and the more I had time to think about the more my answer was a yes. We have been friends for so long it just almost seems natural. We know each other more than our parents or anyone else knows us. I can take one look at you and you don't even have to say anything I know something is wrong with you. I know what it takes to make you feel better. That is what this is about.
By the time, Colby had finished talking both he and Leighla had finished their meals. Leighla is not someone to interrupt anyone when they are explaining something. She likes to listen to hear their emotion, the tone of their voice, and she likes to look in their eyes to see if what they are saying is the truth. When she looked into his eyes while he was talking she could tell that he meant every word of what he said, when she heard his voice, she heard the emotion in it, how strong it was. Her feelings at the moment hadn't come through until he had finished talking. It hit her like a train though when he had finished. All the emotion could be seen on her face.
Leighla Schultz: Oh.....wow...Colby I don't really know what to say right now. You have certainly obtained what you said tonight, a surprise. I'm assuming there is more to come though since that was only my first question. I think I want that to be my last question. I just want to let you go on with the night because to be honest with you I'm not sure what to think and I want to see where tonight leads. You are my best friend and I want to see just how you feel and what you want out of us.
Colby and Leighla got up from the table and walked into the living room. The both sat on the couch and looked at the fire for a few minutes. Neither really wanted to start the next portion of the conversation and this was awkward for both of them. But it was something that he was trying to do and she wanted to hear him out completely and explore what she was feeling also before she just jumped to an answer. He was building up something to say but before he did this he looked her in the eyes and placed his hand on hers. She did not move her hand, she was used to it, but tonight it seemed different. The emotions were not the same as they were before. She was thinking on what he had to say earlier and she knew there was more to come. Her main thought was, do I really like Colby more than just my best friend? Could it be that he is right that we have crossed the line. If we have, could we last? How would this affect our relationship?
Colby Lopez: Leighla this is so weird I know. I'm so used to us just hanging out and it being natural fun. I guess this had to happen eventually though. We have been friends since we met, and neither of us are gay so feelings beyond friendship were going to show up. I believe they have before and we just threw them to the side though. When you kissed me, it was something that hadn't ever happened between us before and I think that broke down all the barriers that kept us as friends. I don't know where this was going to go. I know I want to find out.
Leighla Schultz: I understand where you are coming from Colby. I know that you have thought about this. I know this must have been hard for you to do this. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm not really speaking. I want you to know that it's not because I don't like you, I'm just searching my feelings also. This was a surprise but I won't say it was unpleasant. I don't know where this would go either. I don't know how this would affect our friendship. I see that since you are trying this that you thought about it long enough and know that you want to at least try. Let’s just keep talking for right now and we'll see where I am by the end of the night. Right now Colby, you know I'm always honest with you, and I'm right on the fence. I could go either way. So keep talking with me and we'll see what happens.
Colby and Leighla continued to talk on and on for an hour or so. They begin to remember just how easy it was to talk with each other, even on a subject that was hard to talk about like this. They eventually went from the couch to the floor next to the fire. Colby got a blanket and the two laid next to a fire with a blanket over them talking about where they are right now, and do they want to try and explore anything more. By the end of the night, it seemed they had decided to take their friendship to the next level. Colby not wanting to assume had to ask the question to Leighla to be sure.
Colby Schultz: So I think I already know this answer now, but you know us, we are never one to be satisfied and we won't get the answer unless we actually ask the question. I'm just glad though that you listened to what I had to say. You could have just shut me out at the beginning but you listened and kept an open mind on the situation. You and I maybe were meant to be after all the heartaches and heartbreaks but we just had to go through it all to get to this point. I just wanted to say all of this though before I wanted to ask the question. So here is goes, Leighla will you be mine? Will you be my girlfriend?
In the best way she could think of answering the question Leighla leaned over, took Colby's face in her hands, and pulled him slightly to her as she gave him a long soft kiss on the lips. When she released him she looked into his eyes. A smile came over both of their faces and she kissed him again. The fire in the background blazed through the night being the only light in the house besides the small light from the few candles. The night went on nice and long as Leighla and Colby enjoyed the night in each other’s arms knowing that they had just taken an important step in their relationship as friends and more.
As he opened his eyes from the dream Colby looked down at Leighla smiling. The thought that they had been through so much and ended up where they are today was amazing. He wouldn’t know where he would be without her being in his life. It was her strength that allowed him to continue to keep working doing the job that he loved to do. Even when he had his doubts, she assured him he was doing the right thing and it just reaffirmed his beliefs. She was his rock, and there was only one thing he could do for her to show her it was worth everything they had gone through, he wanted to win the title and bring it home to her. He wanted to put it around her waist because she was his champion. He lightly kissed her forehead and pulled her closer to him as he closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep.
